International Courier Business in the post-CoVid e | International Courier Business in the post-CoVid era
It may seem all doom and gloom today, with the Coronavirus ravaging countries and homes alike. But one thing we need to firmly believe in is the ability of humankind to adapt and survive. Although, the world is less likely to be the same by the time we have got over the present crisis, the fundamentals remain same. What will the international courier business look like in the coming years once we have recovered from the impact coronavirus has had on the industry?
With manufacturing likely to get decentralised and going back to pre 80-90s era again, world’s dependence on China will reduce. This will pave way for more supply chains which not only minimize impacts like the coronavirus, but also cause the least disruption in scenarios when something like these repeats on a regional scale. This will mean two things – one, the supply chain will be more distributed across continents, and two, the ability to switchover will build redundancies into the system. The international courier business can greatly benefit from both these scenarios, where India can become a large part of both inbound and outbound supply chains in the world consumption pyramid. Its proximity to South-East Asia (manufacturing hub) and Africa (some part of natural resources hubs) will mean India becomes a key transit point for some products. Identifying and taking the first mover advantage can help create value for the Indian industry. |

Blue Dart freighters with a carrying capacity of 34 tonnes are flying on international routes to ensure continuity of essential supply chain in India, as per the company’s official report.

Logistics costs set to rise as freighters hike tar | Truckers and transporters are increasing prices by as much as 80% and freighter operators are adding surcharges for transportation of goods as they grapple with regulatory challenges, shortage of manpower and a huge slump in supply.
This will increase logistics costs for companies and likely in products as well, industry executives said.
Truckers have increased tariffs by up to 80%, said people aware of the matter. Blue Dart has implemented a 25% emergency situation surcharge (ESS). Air India said it will increase freight charges by 90% per kilo if it doesn’t have sufficient cargo to ferry.
“Truck rentals have shot up for essential items such as fruits and vegetables despite a waiver of toll fee, motor vehicle taxes and some other incentives such as deferment of EMIs on truck loans,” said SP Singh, a senior fellow at the Indian Foundation of Transport Research and Training.
Ashok Walunj, a director at the Agriculture Produce Market Committee in Maharashtra, said most truckers get to ferry cargo only one way and return with empty trucks. He said the increase in Maharashtra is only 20%.
Manpower shortage is another reason. Up to 1.5 million of 5 million truck drivers in India are not coming to work.

Pandemic, lockdown to impact profitability of dome | The rapid rise of Covid-19 pandemic and the Centre's decision to contain the disease outbreak in India through a 40-day lockdown is adversely affecting the domestic logistics sector, especially road transportation, ratings agency Icra said in its report today.
The immediate impact of the pandemic on the logistic sector has been a sharp fall in freight availability due to restrictions on production of non-essential goods, and shortage of fleet for movement of goods owing to dearth of drivers and consequent spike in truck rentals.
“With the likelihood of lockdown being lifted gradually and muted recovery in industrial activity, the logistic sector, including warehousing, is likely to witness sharp demand contraction in the near-term. In our view, while the entire value chain in logistics right from transportation to warehousing would be adversely affected, entities with asset-heavy business model will see a greater impact owing to high fixed costs," the report quoted Shamsher Dewan, vice president as saying.

India: Coronavirus spread to weigh on domestic por | The spread of Covid-19 has made business tougher for domestic ports and logistics firms, which were already grappling with slow earnings growth.
At present, sectors like warehousing, trucking, and last-mile delivery, are facing several challenges. Labour shortage has turned out to be the biggest one, across segments.
A longer turnaround time in case of ports, demand shock impacting volumes, and supply chain disruption impacting last-mile delivery, are other challenges.
“Factoring in the demand shock and supply chain disruptions, we are cutting FY21E and FY22E volume growth for Adani Ports to -2 per cent and 11 per cent, and for Gujarat Pipavav Ports to -3 per cent and 11 per cent (earlier 10 per cent each), respectively,” said Edelweiss Research in its report.
In the December quarter, Gujarat Pipavav took a hit in operating profit (sequentially), as its revenue declined alongside, while Adani Ports witnessed a jump in both parameters during the period under review.
“In our view, bigger and multi-cargo ports are better off during a downtrend. Most ports of Adani are multi-cargo and bigger, which give it better control on traffic by offering discounts. Hence, we expect it to continue to outgrow the industry,” said Edelweiss.
Cargo-wise, India’s rapidly growing container trade (25 per cent mix) is likely to take a bigger knock on account of strong global inter-linkages in container movement.

Logistics companies FORECE TO suspend operations | Mumbai: Air freight operators and logistics firms are being forced to suspend operations because goods are piling up at cargo terminals due to lack of staff and trucks have been halted by police enforcing the Covid-19 lockdown across the country. That could lead to essential supplies grinding to a halt as the country embarks on a three-week lockdown despite express government assurances that this wouldn’t be the case.
Among the goods ferried by these firms are food, medicines, masks, sanitisers and even testing kits for the Covid-19 virus.
Global air freighter operators Fedex and UPS are suspending most flight operations to and from India. DHL Express may follow soon. Logistics companies including Ecom Express, Safexpress and Spoton Logistics are shutting warehouses and delivery centres. They have stopped taking orders. Trucks of India’s DTDC, carrying medicines and equipment, have been halted midway. Future Supply Chain, which carries goods to Big Bazaar stores, is managing “sporadic operations” but its trucks are banned in states such as Punjab.
Acute Shortage of Staff
“We are seeing a major supply chain disaster in the coming days,” said Vijay Kumar, chief operating officer of the Express Industry Council of India lobby group.
The government ordered a 21-day lockdown of the entire country from Wednesday to prevent the spread of Covid-19. All transport has been suspended with essential goods being exempted.
